2023-2024 Pensacola Camellia Club Calendar

August 2023

Tuesday Aug. 15thTo kick off the new season, we will have a “Welcome Back Picnic” at the Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Avenue, Pensacola Florida. Please call Louise at 850-780-0410 and let her know if you are coming so we have a head count for our meal. Bring a dessert or drink item of your choice to share with members. Social is at 6pm, dinner buffet at 6:30pm.

September 2023

Tuesday Sept. 19thGeneral Meeting – Program, Louise Seitz to present, “Plant Tags & Camellia Forms meets Bingo, What?”. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola. Feel free to bring a treat to share for social at 6:30pm, program at 7:00pm.

Saturday Sept. 30thUWF Camellia Garden Work Day starting at 9am. We will be doing general cleaning up of the garden. Please bring your gloves and water bottles.

October 2023

Friday Oct. 13th & Saturday Oct. 14thThe Gulf Coast Camellia Society conference in Covington, LA hosted by Northshore Camellia Society. See the September newsletter for agenda and registration form.

Saturday Oct. 14thPensacola Camellia Club at Navy Point Fall Arts and Crafts Fair, selling camellias and promoting upcoming club events. The fair is at Triangle Park located at 315 Sunset Avenue, Pensacola.  If you can help between 8:30am – 3pm please call Louise at 850-780-0410 so we know who will be helping. Please bring a chair, dress for the weather and we will greet shoppers with camellias and smiles!

Tuesday Oct. 17thGeneral Meeting – Program: Kip from Flowerwood Plant Development Services will present, October Magic® series. This will include a sneak preview of the summer and fall blooming Camellia Azalea Hybrids. Come before 7pm if you are a newer member for a demo on potting air-layers and gibbing. You will need to ‘gib’ 7 weeks prior to our show date (1st application Oct 21st) to have your camellias ready to produce blooms for our December 9th show. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program.

Saturday Oct. 21st – ALL HANDS NEEDED! This is a very BIG and Important Work Day at the Shade House starting at 9:00am. We will be potting our harvested air layers, spraying camellias, fertilizing, and general clean up. Please bring your gloves and water bottles.

Saturday Oct. 28thUWF Camellia Garden Work Day starting at 9:00am. We will be gibbing and general cleaning up of the garden. Please bring your gloves and water bottles.

November 2023

Thursday Nov. 9thPensacola Camellia Club is included in UWF’s Leisure Learning Fall Programs. Skip Vogelsang will present “Growing Camellias 101”, at the Florida Public Archaeology Network, located at 207 E. Main St. Pensacola, Fl 32501 (by Fish House) starting at 10:00am. Tuesday Nov. 21st – General Meeting – Program: ‘Getting Your Camellias Blooms Ready for Show.’ Location: Garden Center, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program. Please bring in your toy donation for “Toys for Tots” that we will use in place of show prizes for our December Camellia Show winners.

December 2023

Tuesday Dec. 5thGeneral Meeting – Christi Hankins/ Show Chairperson presenting “Where your help is needed for our Camellia Show”. We will finalize all jobs for setup and the show. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program. Friday Dec. 8th – Show set up at Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio located at 1000 College Boulevard. (They are located across from the Pensacola International Airport, on the corner of College Blvd. and 9th Ave.) Time and details will be in the November newsletter.

Saturday Dec. 9thPensacola Camellia Club 85th Annual Camellia Show Location: Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio along with Plant Sales. Exhibitors start time is 7:00am – 10:00am; Judging begins at 10:30am – 1:00pm, Open to the Public to enjoy all of the blooms 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Plant sales 9-4.

January 2024

Tuesday Jan. 16thGeneral Meeting – “Grafting Camellias For That Hard to Propagate Reticulata That You Must Have”. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program.

Saturday Jan. 20thPensacola Camellia Club will be at the Japanese New Year Celebration at Wright Place. This is a perfect match for members to explain Camellias, Native to Japan, and the species Japonica. We hope to bring plants with blooms to attract the public to purchase. There will be live performances of drummers and dancers in the large room for all that pay for admission to enjoy, 11- 4pm.

Wednesday Jan. 31st‘Salute to the Winter Rose, Camellias’ at V. Paul’s – 4:00 pm. All gardeners & camellia lovers, come join us from 4:30- 6pm for a conversation about the care of camellias. Happy Hour prices on wine to salute the winter rose.

February 2024

Friday Feb 2nd – Set up for Community Novice Show at the downtown Public Library on Spring Street starting at 3:00 pm – 4:00pm.

Saturday Feb 3rdPensacola Camellia Club to host Community Novice Show and Plant Sale at the Downtown Library located at 239N. Spring St., Pensacola, Florida 32502. Everyone is invited to bring their camellia blooms to compete for prizes in various categories starting at 9:00am. Wednesday Feb. 14thJoin Us ‘Cocoa & Camellias’ – at UWF Camellia Garden, 1100 University Pkwy. At 10am The Retired Employees Association and the Pensacola Camellia Club to commemorate the funds raised in support of the UWF Camellia Garden. RSVP to AdvancementEvents@uwf.edu by Monday Feb. 12th.

Tuesday Feb. 20thGeneral Meeting – Dr. Mack Thetford will cover, “How To Prepare Your Camellias For Spring”. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program.

Saturday Feb. 24thCANCELLED – The Garden was cleaned for the Feb 14th UWF event. UWF Camellia Garden Work Day starting at 9:00am. We will be gibbing and general cleaning up of the garden. Please bring your gloves and water bottles.

Sunday Feb. 25th – Pensacola Camellia Club will welcome the public to our UWF Camellia Garden, provide air layering and pruning demonstrations, and have plants available for sale starting at Noon to 4:00 pm. March 2024

Saturday Mar. 9th – Pensacola Camellia Club will be selling camellias at the ‘Celebrate the Spring Lawn and Garden Show, 1603 N. 12th Ave, Pensacola, FL 32503 at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart School Parking Lot. Hours are 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. If you can help please contact Trumin at 850-375-4541. Please bring a chair, dress for the weather to greet the shoppers with camellias and smiles!

Wednesday Mar. 13th Pensacola Camellia Club is included in UWF’s Leisure Learning Spring Programs. Leisure Learning members requested a Tour of the UWF Camellia Garden by the Club members at 1:00pm. If you are available to assist please contact Louise at 850-780-0410.

Tuesday Mar. 19th – Award Banquet at V. Paul’s Italian Ristorante. The 2024-2025 Officers and Board Members will be sworn in, T. Morris Scholarship Award, and ‘Person of The Year’ to be announced, along with Special Camellias for Auction. Cash bar will open at 5:30pm with Happy Hour prices all night on alcohol, wine, and beer, followed by dinner at 6:30pm. More information will be in the February newsletter.

Saturday Mar. 23rd – Air layering at member Skip Vogelsang’s yard at 9:00am. The club will provide the supplies needed for air layering, just show and help. Bring your water bottles and gloves. More information will be announced in the April newsletter.

April 2024

Friday Apr. 5th We will be selling the last 100 camellia plants at the UF Milton campus “Spring Flower of Flowers”, 9am-5pm. Address is 5988 Highway 90, Milton, FL. Trumin will need a few helpers with sales that day, call him at 850-375-4541 if you can help.

Saturday Apr. 6th – Air layering at UWF Camellia Garden starting at 9:00am to Noon. Greg Taylor will bring the supplies needed for air layering, just show and help. Bring your water bottles and gloves.

Tuesday Apr. 16thGeneral Meeting – “Dr. Mack Thetford – Spring Care For Camellias”. Location: Garden Center, 1850 N. 9th Ave, Pensacola, 6:30pm for social, 7:00 pm program.

Saturday Apr. 20thUWF Camellia Garden Work Day starting at 9:00am to 12:00pm. If you have wondered how to reduce large camellia plants, John Davy will lead a plant reduction demonstration. We will have members on hand to explain air layers and inside pruning of plants before we all get to work at the garden. Come watch and learn so you can improve your own yard with these methods.

Saturday Apr. 27th – Work Day at the Shade House starting at 9am. We have 3 raised beds that need weeding, record our October potted air layers for inventory and other projects at the shade house that need your help.

June 2024

Saturday June 1st – Officers and Board Member meeting to plan the following season of events. Please share with them your ideas for meeting’s program and events.
